Fastest Way to Farm Pirate Invasion and Black Spot Mount

If you are playing Terraria in Master Mode, mobility quickly becomes one of the most important advantages you can have. Bosses hit harder, enemies spawn more frequently, and surviving often depends on your ability to stay out of danger while still dealing consistent damage. Because of this, finding powerful mobility tools early in Hardmode can dramatically change how difficult the rest of the game feels.

One item that completely changes the experience of early Hardmode is the Black Spot mount. This mount is widely considered one of the most overpowered items you can obtain during this stage of the game because it provides extremely fast horizontal movement and unlimited flight. Once you unlock it, many bosses and events that once felt overwhelming become far easier to manage.

The Black Spot drops from the Flying Dutchman, a pirate ship enemy that appears during the Pirate Invasion event. While the drop rate is not guaranteed, there is a very efficient strategy you can use to farm the event repeatedly and defeat the Flying Dutchman with minimal risk. With the right setup, you can turn what is normally a chaotic invasion into a controlled farm where you safely hunt for the mount.

This guide will walk through the most efficient way to farm Pirate Maps, set up a safe invasion arena, and defeat the Flying Dutchman so you can obtain the Black Spot as early as possible in Hardmode.

Why the Black Spot Is So Powerful

Before diving into the strategy, it helps to understand why the Black Spot is such a valuable item.

The Black Spot allows you to summon a pirate ship that functions as a mount. When riding it, you gain extremely fast movement speed and unlimited flight. This removes the need for wings, rocket boots, or other movement accessories while using it.

The speed alone is what makes the mount so powerful. Many bosses in Terraria struggle to keep up with players who move quickly across the map, especially when you combine that speed with ranged weapons. This makes it much easier to kite enemies, avoid attacks, and maintain distance during boss fights.

For example, bosses like the Destroyer, Skeletron Prime, and the Twins become far easier when you can simply outrun many of their attacks. Instead of building complex arenas or relying on precise dodging, you can stay mobile and deal damage while safely flying across the map.

Because of these advantages, getting the Black Spot early can dramatically reduce the difficulty of the mechanical bosses and several other Hardmode encounters.

Farming Pirate Maps in the Ocean

Before you can farm the Flying Dutchman, you first need to summon a Pirate Invasion. This event is triggered using a Pirate Map, which drops from enemies in the Ocean biome after Hardmode begins.

The drop rate for Pirate Maps is relatively low, so the key to farming them efficiently is increasing enemy spawn rates. The more enemies you kill, the higher your chances of eventually getting a map.

The Ocean biome is the best place to do this because enemies will aggressively move toward you if you are standing in the water. This makes it easier to funnel enemies into a predictable area where you can defeat them quickly.

One of the easiest setups is to build a small platform farm over the ocean. Start by placing a row of wooden platforms above the water. This gives you a safe place to move around and attack enemies while still remaining close enough to the water to attract ocean creatures.

Underneath this platform, place another row of platforms slightly below the water level. This allows you to stand partially submerged in the water without having your character fully underwater. Standing in the water is important because it causes ocean enemies to actively swim toward you, greatly increasing the number of enemies you encounter.

Once the basic platform structure is complete, you can increase spawn rates even further by placing a Water Candle nearby. Water Candles increase enemy spawn rates and reduce the time between spawns. When combined with a Battle Potion, the effect becomes even stronger.

With both of these active, enemies will spawn much more frequently around your character. At this point, the process becomes very simple. Move back and forth along the platform while defeating enemies as they approach. Because of the increased spawn rate, you will encounter far more enemies than usual, which significantly improves your chances of receiving a Pirate Map.

Sometimes you may receive a map quickly, while other times it may take longer depending on luck. However, using this setup ensures that you are killing enemies as efficiently as possible, which greatly speeds up the farming process.

Preparing for the Pirate Invasion

Once you obtain a Pirate Map, the next step is preparing a safe arena where you can handle the Pirate Invasion event.

The Pirate Invasion can be chaotic if you attempt to fight it in an open area, especially in Master Mode where enemies deal significantly more damage. Instead of fighting pirates directly, the goal is to build a structure that allows you to survive the invasion safely while enemies defeat themselves.

A well-designed defensive base makes this event much easier to control.

The base should be a fully enclosed structure with strong walls that prevent enemies from entering. Inside the base, you should have enough room to move around comfortably while still remaining protected from attacks.

On both sides of the structure, you should create lava pits. These pits will automatically eliminate most pirate enemies as they attempt to reach you. The lava should be shallow enough to damage enemies without destroying their loot.

To make the farm even more efficient, you can place actuators on blocks covering the lava pits. Actuators allow you to toggle blocks on and off using a lever or switch. When the blocks are active, the lava pit is covered and enemies cannot fall into it. When the blocks are deactivated, the lava is exposed and enemies will fall in.

This setup gives you full control over when enemies die and when they remain alive.

Another helpful feature is building a narrow tower on top of your base. The Flying Dutchman sometimes becomes stuck on thin structures, which can make it easier to damage safely from below. Even if it does not get stuck, the tower can still help funnel enemies into predictable positions.

Once everything is set up, you can use the Pirate Map to begin the invasion.

Handling the Pirate Invasion Safely

When the Pirate Invasion begins, waves of pirate enemies will start spawning and moving toward your location. Because your base is sealed and surrounded by lava traps, most of these enemies will eliminate themselves without requiring much effort from you.

Inside your base, there is only one enemy you need to be cautious of.

After defeating a Pirate Captain, a ghost version of the enemy will spawn. This ghost can fly through walls and deal significant damage if it reaches you. Because of this, it is important to keep your weapon ready and eliminate the ghost quickly before it becomes a problem.

Aside from these ghosts, the rest of the pirates should pose very little threat thanks to the lava traps.

As the event progresses, you will notice a percentage indicator showing how much of the invasion has been completed. The Flying Dutchman cannot spawn until the invasion reaches 50 percent completion, so the first half of the event will mainly involve defeating standard pirate enemies.

Once the invasion reaches the halfway point, there is a chance for a Flying Dutchman to appear.

Defeating the Flying Dutchman

When the Flying Dutchman spawns, it will hover above your base and begin firing projectiles. At this point, you should immediately close the lava pits using your actuator lever.

Closing the lava pits prevents the remaining pirate enemies from dying automatically. This is important because killing too many enemies will cause the invasion to end before you have time to farm the Flying Dutchman.

By controlling when enemies die, you can extend the event and fight multiple pirate ships in a single invasion.

The Flying Dutchman itself has several cannons that fire projectiles and deal significant damage if you are exposed. However, if you remain inside your protected base, most of its attacks will not reach you.

The goal is to attack the ship safely from within your structure.

One of the most effective weapons for this fight is the Flying Knife, which drops from Hallowed Mimics. The Flying Knife can continuously damage enemies while hovering in place, making it extremely effective against stationary targets like the Flying Dutchman.

Other weapons can work well too. The Daedalus Stormbow is a strong option because its arrows rain down from above, allowing you to damage the ship without needing direct line of sight. Certain yoyos can also be effective since they can attack through small openings in your base.

Eventually, the Flying Dutchman will be destroyed and drop its loot. If you are lucky, this is when the Black Spot mount will appear.

After defeating the ship, you can reopen one of the lava pits or manually defeat a few pirates to allow the invasion progress to increase again. Once enough enemies are defeated, another Flying Dutchman may spawn.

You can repeat this process multiple times during a single invasion.

Farming the Black Spot Efficiently

Because the Black Spot does not drop every time you defeat the Flying Dutchman, you may need to repeat this process several times before obtaining the mount.

Sometimes you may get lucky and receive the drop quickly. Other times, it may take several invasions before you finally see it appear.

During one of my farming attempts, I actually managed to get two Black Spots in a single invasion. However, before that happened I had several invasions where the mount did not drop at all.

The key is simply continuing the process until the mount appears.

Once you finally obtain the Black Spot, the effort becomes completely worth it. The mobility it provides makes boss fights far easier and allows you to explore the world much more quickly.

Many players consider it one of the best items to obtain early in Hardmode, especially when playing in Master Mode where movement and positioning are critical for survival.

With the Black Spot in your inventory, the rest of Hardmode becomes significantly more manageable.
