One of the biggest milestones in Hardmode progression is obtaining some of Terraria’s most powerful and iconic swords. Weapons like the Terra Blade require a crafting material called the Broken Hero Sword, which only drops from a powerful enemy called Mothron during the Solar Eclipse event. Because of this, learning how to farm Mothron efficiently is extremely important if you want to craft some of the best melee weapons in the game.
The Solar Eclipse is also one of the most rewarding events in Terraria. Along with Broken Hero Swords, it features several unique enemies that drop powerful weapons and tools. One of the most popular drops is the Death Sickle, a weapon dropped by Reapers that fires powerful projectiles through walls. Other enemies during the event also drop useful gear, making the Solar Eclipse one of the best farming opportunities in Hardmode.
However, Mothron itself is extremely dangerous in Master Mode. It moves quickly, deals massive damage, and can overwhelm players who try to fight it in confined spaces. Because of this, the safest strategy is to control the battlefield using a defensive base and then defeat Mothron in open air using a high-speed mount.
This guide explains how to build an effective Solar Eclipse farming base, the best gear to use, how to summon the event early, and the safest strategy for defeating Mothron repeatedly.
Building a Solar Eclipse Farming Arena
Before starting the Solar Eclipse event, it is highly recommended to build a defensive arena that allows you to safely farm enemies. During the event, large numbers of powerful monsters spawn continuously, and trying to fight them all directly can quickly become overwhelming.
A simple but extremely effective solution is building a fortified base with lava traps on both sides.
The base should be fully enclosed with walls and a roof to prevent enemies from attacking you from above. On each side of the base, create shallow lava pits where enemies will fall in as they attempt to reach you. The lava will damage and eventually kill most ground enemies automatically, allowing you to farm drops without constantly fighting every enemy that spawns.
This setup dramatically reduces the difficulty of the Solar Eclipse because it eliminates most of the weaker enemies while allowing you to focus on the stronger threats.
One downside to using lava traps is that coins can be destroyed by the lava before you have a chance to collect them. However, this problem can be partially solved using a Treasure Magnet, which increases the pickup range of coins and items. With this accessory equipped, you can gather drops much more easily without exposing yourself to danger.
Inside the base, leave enough space to move around comfortably and attack enemies that manage to survive the lava traps. Platforms can also be added inside the structure to give you additional vertical movement if needed.
With this base in place, most Solar Eclipse enemies will eliminate themselves as they attempt to reach you, turning the event into a much safer farming opportunity.
Recommended Gear for Mothron Farming
With the arena completed, the next step is choosing the right equipment. Mothron is extremely aggressive and deals significant damage in Master Mode, so mobility and ranged damage are both extremely important.
For armor, Hallowed Armor is an excellent choice at this stage of Hardmode. It provides strong defense and also grants the Holy Protection effect, which gives you a brief moment of invincibility after taking damage. This ability can be extremely helpful when fighting fast enemies like Mothron.
For weapons, a strong ranged option is recommended. In my experience, the Hallowed Repeater works very well because it offers solid damage and good attack speed. However, several other ranged weapons can also perform well depending on your preference.
Weapons such as the Uzi, Megashark, or even the Minishark can be effective when paired with strong ammunition. Repeater weapons combined with powerful arrows can also deal significant damage during the fight.
Accessories should focus on boosting ranged damage and improving projectile effectiveness. The Magic Quiver is particularly useful when using bows because it increases arrow speed and damage. Pairing this with the Ranger Emblem provides an additional boost to ranged damage, allowing you to defeat enemies faster.
Another essential part of this strategy is the Black Spot mount. This mount provides extremely fast movement and unlimited flight, making it one of the most powerful mobility tools in early Hardmode.
The speed of the Black Spot allows you to outrun many enemy attacks and maintain distance from dangerous enemies. This advantage becomes especially important when fighting Mothron.
Getting Solar Tablet Fragments Early
To summon the Solar Eclipse event whenever you want, you need to craft a Solar Tablet. This item requires Solar Tablet Fragments, which are normally found inside the Lihzahrd Temple in the Jungle.
Normally, players cannot enter the temple until after defeating Plantera, but there is a well-known trick that allows you to enter the temple much earlier. Surprisingly, this trick was not removed in the Journey’s End update, which suggests the developers intentionally left it available.
Using a simple platform trick, you can walk through the temple door without the Temple Key.
To perform the trick, place three wooden platforms stacked vertically against the temple door. Then use a hammer to adjust the platforms into an L-shaped pattern. Once the platforms are positioned correctly, hold the down key while moving toward the door. Your character will slide through the platforms and pass directly through the temple entrance.
Once inside the temple, it is important to proceed carefully. The temple is filled with traps that can deal heavy damage, especially in Master Mode. Try to disable as many traps as possible by destroying the pressure plates and dart traps you encounter.
As you explore the temple, open chests and defeat enemies such as Lihzahrds and Flying Snakes. These enemies have a chance to drop Solar Tablet Fragments.
After collecting eight fragments, you can craft a Solar Tablet, which allows you to summon the Solar Eclipse event at any time during the day.
Starting the Solar Eclipse
Timing the Solar Eclipse correctly allows you to maximize the amount of farming you can do during the event.
The Solar Eclipse can only be activated during the daytime and will automatically end when night begins. Because of this, the best time to use the Solar Tablet is immediately at 4:30 AM when the day begins.
Starting the event as early as possible ensures that you get the longest possible Solar Eclipse, giving you more time to farm enemies and defeat multiple Mothrons.
Once the event begins, enemies will start spawning rapidly around your location. Thanks to the lava trap arena you built earlier, most of these enemies will fall into the lava pits and defeat themselves automatically.
However, certain enemies such as Reapers can still be dangerous. Reapers are large enemies that move quickly and deal heavy damage. Fortunately, if your base has high ceilings, they can often become trapped underneath the structure, allowing you to eliminate them safely from above.
With most enemies neutralized by the lava traps, you can focus on waiting for Mothron to appear.
The Best Strategy for Defeating Mothron
Mothron spawns multiple times during each Solar Eclipse and is the main enemy you will be farming for Broken Hero Swords.
When Mothron appears, it is usually best to leave your base immediately instead of fighting it in a confined space. Fighting inside the base can make it difficult to avoid its attacks.
Instead, mount the Black Spot and begin flying across the map. Mothron will follow you, allowing you to lure it away from the rest of the enemies.
While flying, continuously attack Mothron using your ranged weapon. Because the Black Spot provides extremely fast movement speed, you can maintain distance while steadily dealing damage.
Eventually you will reach the edge of the world near the ocean biome. When this happens, simply fly upward and circle around Mothron before continuing in the opposite direction. This keeps the fight going without forcing you to land or stop moving.
This method works extremely well because it prevents Mothron from surrounding you with other Solar Eclipse enemies. Instead, you are fighting it alone in open air where it is much easier to dodge its attacks.
After a short battle, Mothron will eventually fall and drop coins along with its possible loot.
Farming Broken Hero Swords
When Mothron dies, there is a chance that it will drop a Broken Hero Sword. Unfortunately, the drop is not guaranteed, which means you may need to defeat several Mothrons before receiving one.
Fortunately, Mothron typically spawns multiple times during each Solar Eclipse, especially during longer events that start early in the day.
By using the strategy described above, you can defeat each Mothron quickly and safely while continuing to farm the event.
Eventually, one of the defeated Mothrons will drop the Broken Hero Sword you need.
Once you obtain the item, you can use it to craft powerful weapons such as the Terra Blade, one of the most iconic swords in Terraria.
With an efficient farming arena and the mobility provided by the Black Spot mount, collecting Broken Hero Swords becomes much easier, allowing you to progress further into Hardmode and prepare for even tougher bosses ahead.
