How to Get Iron in Astroneer

Astroneer has many resources. Most of the high-level resources cannot be found on the starting planet, including Iron. For many beginners, this can be a daunting task. Leave your home planet in search of resources where you have no idea to find them, or know what look like? This article is going to help you with just that.

Iron or Hematite can be found on both Novus and Glacio; However, contrary to popular belief, Novus is the easier and more Hematite rich planet to go to. You will need to travel to Novus (or Glacio) and mine Hematite in a cave. Once you get the Hematite, you will need to go back to your base and smelt it into Iron.

Where to Look

  • Novus

Most people think that Glacio is the best place to look for Hematite. Novus is, in fact, the best place to find Hematite (Iron). The difficulty is at medium, and the Primary abundant resource is Hematite.

  • Glacio

If you are looking for more of a challenge, or want to gather Titanite as well as Hematite, you’ll want to travel to Glacio. This planet is very hard to survive on and Is primarily harvested for Titanite.

What You’ll Need

  • Rocket ship
  • Tethers
  • Storage

A rocket ship doesn’t take too long to make. You will be able to craft one with the resources found on the starting planet. Make sure to bring tethers for your journey into the caves. It is also smart to bring some extra storage so you can bring as much Hematite back as possible. Be sure to bring enough fuel, or thrusters to make it to the planet and back.

Travel to Planet

Navigating to the desired planet is easier than it used to be. Make sure you double check it is the correct planet.

Land and Find a Cave

Once you land, you are going to want to find a cave near your ship. These are where the tethers come in handy.

Finding Hematite

In the picture above, you can see what natural Hematite (Iron) looks like. Once you find it, mine as much as you need and head back to your home planet.

Smelt the Hematite into Iron

Once you get back home, smelt the Hematite into Iron.
