When it comes to gaming, there are a few different OSs that are very limited in their selection of games to choose from. Mac is the specific one we will be talking about today.
The number of free games on Mac is very limited and we are here to show you 9 more games that you can play entirely for free on Mac OS.
Most of these games are fairly easy to run so even if you have a lower-end Mac, you will probably have an easy time downloading and booting it up. This list has a ton of different genres of games so if you aren’t a huge fan of specific ones, there might be a game for you on this list.
With that being said, here are our best free games that you can play on Mac.
9. War Thunder
War Thunder is a military simulator that is very similar to the World of Tanks series. What makes it stand out from the others is the fact that you can play tanks, planes, and boats in the same game.
If you enjoy playing these types of simulators, then consider playing this one instead of let’s say World of Tanks because you literally get 3 games within 1. The tank battles are probably the best part of the game because there are hundreds to choose from and work towards unlocking.
There is even a conquest mode where all vehicle types are present at the same time and it just makes for great immersion. It feels extremely immersive to have players in planes fighting each other above you as you fight the other tanks around the map.
The boat combat is not amazing, but it still can be fun. The whole game is a great package if you enjoy these simulators and you can even play with friends too. It does have an in-game currency that you can purchase, but it is a free game so it is pretty normal to see.
It was a game that I personally played for a long time before I got a better PC so it is definitely worth playing if you don’t want to spend any money and you don’t have the newest hardware.
8. Crusader Kings II
As someone who has recently been pretty obsessed with strategy games, I can safely say that Crusader Kings II is not only a great free strategy game but one that works extremely well on Mac.
This strategy game is set in medieval times and shares a lot of qualities with other games in the genre like Risk or Hearts of Iron but it has its own character and personality to it.
Oddly, the game is really likable and it’s unlike other strategy games where you send your troops in to die but you actually want to be careful with sending troops in because a lot of times you get a bit attached to your troops, if that makes sense.
It is definitely an outlier in strategy games and adds a lot of personalized aspects to it, like building out your family tree and some other aspects.
If you like strategy games and your needing them to be compatible with your mac, Crusader Kings II is an excellent option for you to look into.

7. SAS: Zombie Assault 4
SAS: Zombie Assault 4 is a cartoonish top-down wave survival game where you fight off huge hordes of zombies. The game isn’t the most graphically intensive or even the most polished, but Chug and I used to have a great time playing the previous game in the series.
Even though the game has an obvious mobile game feeling to it, there’s a ton of replayability in the form of weapons, enemies, and maps. One of the game’s best features is that it has four-player coop, and you can play with your friend on Windows devices if you really want to.
The matches you play in this get pretty intense sometimes, with the entire floor being covered with bodies and enemies advancing from every angle. Some people say that there are a few pay-to-win elements, but for all the content they do give you, I think you can overlook it.
You don’t have to spend any money to have fun in this game, and since it’s available on Mac, it’s another great free game to add to your collection.

6. We Were Here
We Were Here is a co-op-only game that is extremely unique. We have covered this game on other lists before, but it can be played on Mac and deserves to be on this one.
The premise of the game is that there are 2 people: an adventurer and a librarian. You and a friend can choose which role you want and you need to use each other’s help to escape the building you found yourselves in.
It is a really cool game because you can’t see the other person’s screen so you need to talk to each other and explain exactly what you are seeing so the other person can help you out.
There are 2 other games in the series currently, with another one releasing soon, so if you really enjoy this game, go ahead and buy the other ones, because they just get better with each one.
This is a puzzle game so if you don’t enjoy puzzle games, you won’t really like this one. It is on the shorter side, but it is definitely worth playing through twice to see both sides of the story.
If you have a Mac, get a friend and you can enjoy the puzzles of we were here with them for free.
5. Alpaca Stacka
Although it’s short, Alpaca Stacka is a cute little game to play on your mac to pass some time.
As I just mentioned, the game is extremely short, like, 5-20 minutes type of short, but it really is worth checking out and it’s surprisingly widely loved on Steam.
You play as Paz, an Alpaca whose main goal is to help the other animals around the world. You also need to collect all the chickens around the map.
The main pull of the game is the incredibly relaxing feel that it gives you. It’s something you want to play with headphones and you can honestly play it a few times over just solely for the chill nature.
I know it seems like an odd choice but don’t just take my word for it, on Steam it holds an overwhelmingly positive review status, and that is not easy to get.
Anyway, I really recommend downloading and playing through the game because it’s super short and there isn’t really anything to lose.

CS:GO is a game that most gamers have heard of before. It’s consistently one of the top played games on Steam, and it always surprises me how huge its fanbase is. It wasn’t always free, but when Valve made it free it became one of the most played free games of all time.
Despite this, there’s still a chance that some people haven’t ever given it a shot before. If you’re looking for games on Mac, then this is a really great option when it comes to multiplayer shooters.
It has an older style of graphics, which will help it run well both on older Macs and on newer ones. The gameplay involves one team attempting to stop the other from planting a bomb in some part of the map. Between rounds, you buy weapons with the money you gained from the previous round.
If someone takes you out, you won’t be able to respawn until the next round. Because of this, it’s a highly competitive game, even on the casual game mode.
If you need a good competitive multiplayer game to play on Mac, then CS:GO is a game that you should definitely check out.

3. Hades’ Star
Hades’ Star is a strategy game where thousands of people play together in one single galaxy. You start with a small base and you need to slowly build up your space empire. You need to find a yellow star to establish your permanent base, but you need to watch out for rival bases.
Red stars are there for only a short amount of time and they usually have enemy NPC ships around to destroy and loot for materials. White stars can be used to start corporations with other players and it is recommended to join one so you have allies.
The hardest star to go to is the blue stars. These only last about 5 minutes and you can only send 1 ship into the area. You and your friends can risk a ship for some absolutely amazing loot. All these stars are fought over in the game and make for a very unique space colony builder.
There are people that have thousands of hours in this game and when you find a game that you can spend a ton of time in, they are definitely worth looking into. If you like space colony simulators, then you will absolutely enjoy Hades’ Star.
Himno is a game that I personally love and praise just for the sheer graphical style of the game.
I was actually really excited to see that this game was compatible with Mac because it’s a game that you can keep coming back to because of the nature of the game.
Himno is an extremely relaxing 2D platforming game where you traverse an endless amount of levels, all of which are procedurally generated.
The platforming elements are super solid and smooth and because the maps are generated procedurally, you can really hop on and play for an unlimited amount of time.
You can dash, jump, climb, and use lifts to move around the map and there aren’t any hostile elements to the game, which just adds to the overall relaxing atmosphere that the game creates.
Oh, and the music is great in the game and really sets the mood and honestly it’s so relaxing that I would listen to the music even outside of the game.
So with that being said, I think it’s safe to say that Himno is a great game to download onto your mac.

1. Rogue Glitch
Rogue Glitch is a game I recently discovered, and I’ve been loving it ever since. It’s a stylized roguelike game that I recently featured on my top free roguelikes list, and it’s honestly one of the most fun free single-player games on Steam.
Rogue Glitch focuses heavily on the platforming aspects, as the game auto fires while you focus on dodging. As you complete levels, you’ll get coins to unlock chests that give you unique powerups. Some of the powerups are amazing while others aren’t so great, but it’s always exciting opening a new chest.
The way you go through the rooms is very similar to other roguelike games, but the game also feels completely unique at the same time. After playing it a bit more, I really started to appreciate how good the soundtrack is as well.
The game is single-player by default, but it does have the option to purchase online multiplayer if you really wanted to. Honestly, I feel like this game has more quality than a lot of paid games, so getting it for free is a huge bonus.
If you’re a fan of roguelikes or think the game looks interesting, it’s something that’s definitely worth playing on both Mac and Windows computers.
